The dinosaur of the day: Gryphoceratops
- Leptoceratopsid ceratopsian that lived in the Cretaceous in what is now Alberta, Canada
- Name means “Griffin horned face”
- Found in the Milk River Formation in Dinosaur Provincial Park
- Only holotype found, and consists of a partial right lower jaw
- Named in 2012 by Michael Ryan, David Evans, Philip Currie, Caleb Brown, Don Brinkman
- Type species is Gryphoceratops morrisoni
- Herbivorous
- Oldest known leptoceratopsid, but also one of the most advanced
- Leptoceratopsids are closely related to neoceratopsians, but are more primitive and usually smaller
- Unclear how big it was, but may be the smallest known adult ceratopsian from North America
Fun Fact:
Until the 1950s–70s both sauropods & hadrosaurs were often considered aquatic or semi-aquatic.
